The Holidays: Not Always Merry & Bright
Hello everyone!
I hope you are all staying safe and healthy, and that you've been able to enjoy 2021's holiday season.
I know this time of year isn't always pleasant for a lot of you, and for any number of reasons. I won't go into the details because if you know, you know. But I just wanted to use this post as a gentle reminder that even if you're having a grand old time with family and loved ones, not everyone is able to do the same.
Now, I also understand that sometimes people make the conscious decision to stay by themselves this time of year instead of gathering with a large group of people, whatever their reasoning may be (of course, we're *still* in a global pandemic this season so, I'm sure that's a driving factor for many!). Some of these folks are happy with it; others don't have a choice, and may feel extra lonely.
Reach out to those individuals. Even if it's just a quick text or DM to say a pleasant holiday greeting, I'm pretty certain they'll appreciate the gesture.
As for me and my experience with the holidays, it honestly depends on the year and how my overall health is doing. The past few winter seasons haven't been the most pleasant:
2018 - I had my first in-patient experience for my mental illnesses between Thanksgiving and Christmas
2019 - I had gall stone issues for Thanksgiving and had to eat very, very, VERY light
2020 - I was in the hospital on Thanksgiving for a blood transfusion, and we couldn't travel to my in-laws' place on Christmas Day because of a horrible blizzard
This year, in 2021, I'm extra grateful to say that other than my battle with COVID-19 earlier in the spring, I've been generally healthy and have been able to make the most of this holiday season.
I just need to figure out when my mom's not going to be working like a fiend (she works in retail) so we can get together and have our post-Christmas celebration with dinner and a gift exchange.
This post isn't meant to be a long one, especially since it's technically off-schedule from when I usually give y'all an update on things while sharing some general mental health-related information. BUT I think you get the gist of the message behind this. I'll be back to our regularly scheduled program mid-January with an update on how the new month/new year is going for me so far.
Brightest Blessings to all!
~Melanie
